MD Orthopedics
Clubfoot chronicles offers an honest and heartfelt look at the ups and downs of raising a clubfoot child. While the doctor plays a key role in the handling and the casting part of the treatment, up to 95% of clubfoot treatment is handled – at home – by the parents. New parents can quickly be overwhelmed with the demands of weekly doctor visits, heavy casts, implementing daily stretches, checking the correct fit of casts and boots, and simple management of a newborn’s care. -born, especially if there are other children at home.
After hearing her daughter’s clubfoot diagnosis, Maureen set out to find out as much as she could about the clubfoot defect and treatment options. She spent hours on the computer, finding a lot of information on the casting phase, but very little on the bracing processing phase – also known as the boot and bar phase. This is arguably the most critical part of treatment, as failure to follow the prescribed splint protocol can lead to clubfoot relapse, but there is little information available to help uncertain parents manage this. essential part of their child’s care. It was this struggle to find the information and resources she was looking for that motivated Maureen to write the book, so other clubfoot parents don’t face the same challenges.
Clubfoot chronicles tells the story of Maureen’s personal struggles to care for her child and the fear, anxiety and stress she felt when trying to manage her daughter’s care. With brutal honesty, Maureen shines a light on the many challenges clubfoot parents face and shares the many resources she has discovered that have helped her cope. She hopes other clubfoot parents will benefit from her experiences, wisdom and research and have a smoother and easier course with clubfoot.
Maureen Hoff has her Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy and is passionate about clubfoot advocacy, particularly providing support and resources to fellow clubfoot parents. She is the mother of 3 smart and sassy daughters, the last of which was born with bilateral clubfoot in 2018. Maureen recently became a brand ambassador for MD Orthopedics and is working with them to create supportive content for other parents of club feet.
Clubfoot is one of the most common musculoskeletal birth defects, affecting one in 100 babies worldwide. The non-surgical Ponseti method is the gold standard, used to treat around 95% of clubfoot cases worldwide. This method is safer, cheaper and more efficient, using weekly manipulation and casting of the clubfoot to “train” it in the correct position. Once the plaster phase is over, the child is fitted with an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) to keep the manipulated foot in position. AFO is worn 23 hours a day for three months, then during naps and night sleep for up to five years.
